A tragic accident
“An inquiry has been ordered. Police, along with a forensic team, reached the spot to find out the reasons behind the accident,” Vijay Nehra said.
As Hindustan Times reports, Ahmedabad mayor Bijal Patel also provided an update:
“Twenty-nine people were brought to the hospital out of whom two died while 27 are being treated.”
Publications posted a video of the incident as it happened, and photos have also been widely published of the ride after the crash.

A hydraulic pulley malfunction
While police had not yet lodged an FIR when the reports first came in, government officials said the two deceased were adults.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) chief fire officer MF Dastoor said the accident happened when a pipe on the main shaft of the pendulum ride — called 'Discovery' — broke.
“There are 32 seats in the ride that go round. The pipe of the main shaft broke and crashed on the ground. How that pipe broke is a matter of investigation by Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL),” Dastoor said.
The Hindustan Times reports that eyewitnesses saw a wire in the hydraulic pulley break down shortly after the ride started its first rounds of the day.
Vijay Nehra said that preliminary investigations indicated that the ride wasn't running over capacity. Thirty-one people were reportedly on the ride.
In the aftermath of the accident, opposition Congress alleged negligence on the part of the AMC.
Nehra tweeted that he has instructed police to begin a criminal investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
I have instructed AMC officials to file an FIR with City Police so that we can have a criminal investigation with the help of forensic experts and determine exact reason of the accident.
We need to fix accountability for such horrific accidents.— Vijay Nehra (@vnehra) July 14, 2019
Mayor Patel said, “An inquiry will be conducted to ascertain as to what went wrong, and steps against those responsible for the fault will be taken soon.”
