The long-awaited Harry Potter alternative to the highly addictive Pokemon Go! is almost here. While an exact date has yet to be announced for the release of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the game maker, Niantic has confirmed it will be released later this year.
However, some lucky journalists have had a sneak preview of the game, and we’ve compiled what we know so far here. First, the game is really complicated.

Just like the original Harry Potter books, the game is tangled. Casual gamers might be put off by the depth of the systems and rewards, but true HP fans and lovers of alternative worlds will adore the complexity of the gameplay. Though at its core, the game is pretty simple. Just walk around and do wizardry stuff.
All reports say that the game is ultra fun and will definitely require you to quit as many real-world commitments as possible to dedicate time to wizards to unite.
It’s satisfying to true Harry Potter fans.
Unlike other spin-offs that have been tried. HP: WU (can someone suggest a better nickname?) is legit, despite Rowling not being involved and the voice actors being sound-alikes.
What hard facts do we know?
It’s definitely coming out this year and will be available in 17 languages, but the actual geographical regions the game will be available in isn’t known. Minimum specs are reasonable, and AR is optional. The game will also be free, but there are in-app purchases.
So what is the game actually like?
Reading the description from those lucky enough to have had a taste of the game it seems pretty cool. The basic premise of the gameplay is that objects, artifacts and even people from the wizarding world are turning up in the muggle (human) world for no reason.
As a new recruit of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, established by the Ministry of Magic and the International Confederation of Wizards you are tasked with fixing this ‘calamity.’
The game's website describes the disaster like this: “A calamity has befallen the wizarding world, causing artifacts, creatures, people, and even memories to mysteriously appear in the Muggle world. Witches and wizards from across the globe must come together to solve the mystery of The Calamity, overcome the confounding chaotic magic that surrounds these 'Foundables,' and return them to their rightful place, keeping them safe from Muggle eyes.”
To play the game you’ll walk around in a wizarding-themed version of the real world looking for locations to “foundables” to encounter and places to resupply the spell energy that you use up as you traverse your adventure.
You also need to cast spells as part of battles and other dealings with the “confoundable.” These battles will earn you point and other reward items that will help you to level up. You’ll also be able to find rare foundables that advance the overall plot of why this is all happening anyway.
